Welcome to the Most Unique Rare Book Auction Venue in America!
We enjoyed many years of success serving our global clientele from our Middle Georgia auction floor. But when a Walton County landmark became available in 2019, we envisioned what would become the most unique rare book auction venue in America.
This grand Greek Revival property boasts an interesting provenance. If it looks like a genteel, Southern estate straight out of "Gone With the Wind," then that's because, in a way, it is. Author Margaret Mitchell spent a considerable amount of time in this house during her first marriage to "Red" Upshaw (whose uncle built the home.) It is believed that the character of Rhett Butler was inspired by Red. Certainly this house, along with another home in nearby Covington, GA (known as the "Twelve Oaks" house), informed Mitchell's view of Southern aristocratic architecture; these influences can be seen in her classic book as well as in the movie. Could there be a more fitting place to sell rare books? We certainly don't think so.
The property has served in various capacities over the years, and recently it was used as a filming location. The greatest compliment a book collector can receive is that he or she has 'interesting' books; so, it is only fitting that the many interesting books we sell are auctioned from an 'interesting' venue. From a practical standpoint, this location is close to Atlanta, only a few miles off of I-20, and equidistant to the academic centers in Atlanta and the University of Georgia in nearby Athens.
For visitors interested in having a relaxing and stress-free mini-vacation after the auctions, Social Circle is only a few minutes away from great antiquing in nearby Monroe and Madison. After you leave the auction, you can walk directly across the street and eat at the renowned Blue Willow Inn restaurant. If golf appeals to you, then the Hard Labor Creek course is only 7 miles down the road (known for its challenging layout.) If you're interested in seeing some filming locations in the "Hollywood of the South," then Covington, GA is just down the road. If fine resorts are more to your taste, then the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee is only about 25 minutes away. And if you like stress, traffic, noise, hustle, and bustle, then just head on over to Atlanta!
We hope you come and visit us on auction day. There's a rocking chair on the front porch with your name on it.
